Located on the Fort Belvoir Campus, the National Museum of the United States Army offers visitors an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the many sacrifices U.S. soldiers make to preserve the freedoms we enjoy. It “provides the only comprehensive portrayal of Army history and traditions through the eyes of the American Soldier,” according to its website.
Built on a 684-acre site, the public museum is a collaboration between the U.S. Army and The Army Historical Foundation and covers more than 245 years of American soldiers’ history. The permanent exhibits include: Soldiers’ Stories. Founding The Nation, Preserving The Nation, Nation Overseas, Global War, Cold War, Changing World, Army and Society, Special Exhibition Gallery, Medal of Honor Experience, Nisei Soldier Experience, and 9/11 Virtual Exhibit. There are also special exhibits, such as the upcoming: So Ready for Laughter: The Legacy of Bob Hope, which opens September 17.
The museum hosts numerous in-person and online educational programs and events, including family activities for children aged 4 to 8, field trips, movies in the museum’s Army Theater, book talks, and more. The museum even hosts yoga classes periodically, where locals can take an afternoon to “de-stress.” The museum’s Army Action Center offers “virtual reality and motion theater experiences.”
Located at 1775 Liberty Drive, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060, it’s open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Christmas. Admission is free, while fees apply for certain programs. All tickets must be secured online before going to the museum. See: thenmusa.org.
